A mobster hires a gang of professional thieves to rob his own casino in Steve Brewer's thriller LOST VEGAS.
Nick Papadopoulos used to be a button man for the Mob. Now he's the front man for an aging casino in Fowler, Nevada, an isolated backwater known as "Lost Vegas." Nick's stuck in a rut and deep in debt. Then he gets an idea If someone would only rob his casino, he could collect on the insurance and get out from under.
Tony Zinn runs a heist crew in San Francisco. He's never even heard of Fowler, Nevada. But Nick makes him an offer that's almost too good to be true.
Neither man expects interference from rival casino owner Big Jim Kelton or his hired goon, a huge Samoan named Shamu. But once they're involved, it can only end in bloodshed.
Filled with twists and double-crosses, LOST VEGAS is Steve Brewer at his best.
"Like Elmore Leonard, the writer whose work his most resembles, Brewer writes with a light and deft touch, bringing style and wit to the crime genre." --David Montgomery, Chicago Sun-Times

The one thing I didn't like about this book was that it was over with too quickly. Once again, Steve Brewer delivers, this time with a fast-moving, gripping heist tale. I agree with the previous reviewer that this book begs for a movie adaptation (Steve's first novel, Lonely Street, was made into a movie now available on DVD), and I've been having fun imagining the ideal ensemble cast Hollywood might put together. If you enjoy crime fiction, you'll love this book. Author Eric Beetner said of Steve, "He's as good as Elmore Leonard with a fraction of the accolades."Product details

Lost Vegas Steve Brewer 9781481892339 Books Reviews
A good "airplane read". No real surprises but entertaining enough
I am a huge fan of heist style stories and this one certainly delivered the goods, and then some. The writing style is smooth as silk. This was a very entertaining read and the pages seemed to fly by. A terrific plot, tremendous characters, lots of action, and many laugh out loud moments. The style is surely reminiscent of Elmore Leonard, but the author adds a Stephen King like touch to it, that makes it his own. This story begs for a movie adaption ala, Oceans 11, Get Shorty etc...Already started reading The Big Wink by the author and am loving it.
I have read every one of Steve Brewer's novels and Lost Vegas is one of his best. With this book Brewer rises to the level of the best suspense writers. His characters are as quirky as any created by Elmore Leonard and his writing is as descriptive and lush as anything written by authors like Michael Connelly and Greg Iles.
If you haven't discovered Steve Brewer, you're missing out. This guy will entertain the hell out of you.
E-book package deals are becoming the rage and they are always a good deal for both the reader and the authors. Die Laughing 1 contained humorous mysteries/thriller by several authors with whom I was unfamiliar. And for $.99? The first in the compilation was Lost Vegas by Steve Brewer.
Shades of Donald Westlake’s Dortmunder with perhaps a touch of noir. Tony Finn and his crew are asked to hit a casino in a small town in Nevada so the owner, a former Chicago hit man, can claim insurance money and make it more competitive with the only other casino in town, run by Big Jim Kelton. It’s your typical heist story gone a bit wrong although I prefer ones with more subtlety and less explosive violence.
Brewer handles things well although not as deftly as Westlake. Certainly a pleasant way to spend time waiting in line or at a doctor’s office, but hardly memorable. Slumming can be fun, too.
This was the first book in a collection of five "comic" crime novels. "Comic" doesn't seem an apt description, but the reading was light, the characters engaging, and the heist plot interesting enough to keep the pages turning quickly. A nice surprise in a discounted collection! I'll look for more of this author's work.
And by Perfect Airplane Reading, I don't mean that either the writing or the story is disposable- I mean it's entertaining and engrossing enough to render turbulence, $7 drinks, and stale pretzels irrelevant. This heist novel is excellently realized, with a cast of memorable characters who all beg to be up there on the big screen. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.
Steve Brewer is able to take me on a wild ride and make me cheer for crooks. How does he do that? I guess there are crooks and then there are bad crooks. I'm always sure the crooks will follow through with their plan to begin a new life. And I'm glad the bad crooks get it in the end.
Lost Vegas takes me on a heist in a seedy casino, and I loved it!
